Babcock State Park, West Virginia

On our drive through the Appalachian region, stretching from Virginia into Kentucky, we visited Babcock State Park in West Virginia. There are extensive hikes and vistas in the park, but being short on time kept us close to the entrance. Fortunately, one needn’t go far the see the mill and enjoy the surrounding area.

A key attraction in the park is the Glade Creek Grist Mill, one of the most photographed sites in the state. The mill is in working condition and Lee, who runs the mill, was happy to show me inside and explain the background of the building and the milling process. He regularly processes cornmeal when the water level is high enough.

We explored a stunning wooded area with a creek running along side the mill. Susanne put her feet in the creek and mentioned it reminded her of the creek she played in growing up.

I also left a little friend here to watch over the park, but you’ll have to read the next post to find out more ;-)
