Bonneville Salt Flats

Departing from the city, we arced around the Great Salt Lake and into the salt flats.

Along the way, is this intriguing tower. This 87-foot-tall sculpture, titled Metaphor: The Tree of Utah, was created by the Swedish artist Karl Momen in the 1980s and dedicated in 1986. It’s six spheres are said to be coated with natural rock and minerals native to the region.

The Bonneville Salt Flats lay just beyond the great lake to the west. We pulled off the Interstate into a rest stop to take in the view and explore the crusty white surface. Nearby is the Bonneville Speedway, where visitors can drive on the salt flats.
