This is an exciting time of year for me. With more pronounced seasons in the Pacific Northwest than what I knew growing up in California, Spring has become my favorite season. It brings such a remarkable change from the dark, somewhat dreary winters. I enjoy the rain and the occasional snow, but when things start leafing out again and colorful blooms emerge, I get very excited. It begins a succession of surprises throughout spring, summer and even fall.
The first thing to bloom in my garden is a Pink Dawn Viburnum. It’s a deciduous shrub that can reach eight feet tall. clusters of tiny pink blossoms emerge in late winter/early spring and then green leaves cover the shrub until fall.
Next we’ll see the hellebores or Lenten Rose come to life. I’ve already noted their buds opening.
