Lake Whatcom is located adjacent to Bellingham and is partially surrounded by residential areas, including Sudden Valley, on its northern end.
The lake, popular for boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and other recreational activities, covers about 5,000 acres. It is approximately 10 miles (16 km) in length and 1 mile (1.6 km) in width at its widest.
