Near the hilltop and to the right is a path to Totnes Castle dating back to the Saxons. It’s a round stone structure with a second level that allows you to walk around the perimeter atop the stone wall. It’s open in the center with green grass filling the space.
A little shop at the base where I paid to enter sells plastic helmets and swords, among other things. I asked the clerk if I would need a sword to experience the castle. He grinned and replied, “Yes, you might need to fend off strapping knights.” My reply was, “Fend off?” I got a laugh in return. The castle, though simple, was interesting and the views were great. I could see the town and the surrounding area 360 degrees around.
